The UN Convention recognizes that a country has an exclusive right to survey and
develop fisheries and mineral resources within a sea area extending up to 200 nautical miles (370 km) from its coast. It also makes the country
responsible for resource and environmental management within the
area (prevention of overexploitation, marine pollution and the like).

zone of about 4.48 million km2 is sixth largest after those of the
